Help for Ukrainian war refugees in Moldova
The Swiss charity “Help for Children in Need” is based in Moldova and has been supporting Ukrainian families that have fled to Moldova since the start of conflict in Ukraine.
The small Swiss charity “Help for Children in Need” (HCN) has been working in Moldova for many years. In cooperation with its Moldovan partner organization “Pro Umanitas Moldova”, it finances and operates 16 day care centers and provides a wide range of support to approximately 400 children from impoverished families.
Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, HCN has also been working to help Ukrainian war refugees that have fled across the border into Moldova. Hilfswerk GL Zürich supports HCN’s commitment to Ukrainian families. With a population of 2.6 million, Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. It has neither the infrastructure nor the financial means to adequately cope with an influx of 600,000 refugees. Although Moldova only represents a transit country for the majority of Ukrainians passing through it, there are currently over 90,000 refugees, half of them children, who have remained in Moldova in the hope of being able to return to their homeland soon. Despite the great poverty of the Moldavians themselves, they have shown tremendous solidarity with the Ukrainian refugees, a large number of whom are housed with local families who themselves have little more than the basic necessities of life. HCN is supporting refugees who find themselves stranded in the villages where it operates day care centers. It is helping to provide them with shelter and basic necessities.
