Hôpital Albert Schweitzer
Quality health care and development projects for the poor population in the Artibonite Valley, Haiti
Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010, Hilfswerk GL Zürich has supported Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) in Haiti.
Founded in 1956, the hospital is located in Deschapelles, 80 kilometers north of the capital Port-au-Prince. HAS provides quality health care for more than 300,000 poor people in the Artibonite Valley and implements various development programs for the rural population. With its comprehensive health care system, it is a pioneer for health care in developing countries.
Hilfswerk GL Zürich transfers funds intended for the HAS to the association “Schweizer Partnerschaft Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, Haiti”. This association, founded by the former medical director of the hospital, pediatrician Dr. Rolf Maibach, finances among other things the pediatric clinic at the HAS. It is by far the largest department of the hospital. The sub-departments of neonatal medicine, department for malnourished children, and pediatric surgery have a central function in the region.
