Reason and Understanding
Description
People can contribute a great deal to their own happiness by living reasonably rather than unreasonably, by emanating kindness of heart rather than coldness, and by treating others with goodwill. As spirit-teacher Joseph explains in the first lecture of this issue, people can earn God’s favor through these spiritual merits and receive a blessing that extends to their descendants, friends, and acquaintances, a blessing that may also bear fruit in a later earthly life.
In the second lecture of this issue, spirit-teacher Lene likens the human soul to a rose. Just as the rose is able to protect itself with its thorns, human beings are given reason and understanding to protect their soul. People can also ask God in prayer for clarity of insight and a healthy mind.
The teachings in this issue also emphasize that people should apply reason and understanding in all areas of life, and especially so in matters of faith. Zealotry and dogmatism are otherwise not far away, as the history of Christianity sadly demonstrates.
